Overwhelmed.

I am a generally organized person.

Bills. Lists. At work. You name it, I probably have some sort of system as to the best way to get it accomplished.

But there is one aspect of my life that overwhelms the ever living daylights out of me: prioritizing major life events.

You're probably saying, Huh??

Seriously though... here's my list of things that need to be accomplished:

  • Buy a new car
  • Buy Josh a new car
  • Buy new things for the house: washer/dryer, mattress, couches
  • Pay for a wedding (it's going to happen one day, whether it's with Josh or not, so it's on the list)
  • Babies (again, one day)
  • Purchase life insurance
  • Start a retirement account
  • Build my dream house
Here's my problem: how in the world do you begin to prioritize those things?

For example, if you're saving money - do you put it into a savings account to save up for a down payment on a new car or do you save it for a future wedding? Do you use it to pay more on your existing mortgage or do you purchase life insurance with it?

Do I work on building the family-size house first or work on the family first?

Do I try to sell this house and buy another? Do I tear this house down, build a duplex on it, live in half for a while until I can afford to build another house elsewhere? Do I tear this house down and build my dream house on the lot even though I'm not too happy with the neighborhood?

I know I put the cart before the horse a lot, but I'm not motivated to accomplish something until I have a plan in place.

I get frustrated because I don't like normal cars. Everything I like just happens to be high end. Do I buy something I don't necessarily like because it's cheaper or buy something I'm going to love?

I get frustrated because property in my neighborhood costs a ridiculous amount of money. I get frustrated when people in other places are buying 2500 sq. ft. homes for $150,000. A house that size in my neighborhood costs a small fortune. But, I want the best of both worlds. I want my neighborhood AND a decent sized house.

I get frustrated because weddings cost so much money. Seriously, I think it's ridiculous that people pay $600 for a freaking cake. I can bake the damn thing for $20 and who seriously remembers wedding cake? You're gonna butcher it and eat it! Why does catering cost $5000? Really? I'm pretty sure those caterers make a 999% profit.

I get frustrated because I'd have to pay someone to help me figure out what to do with the little bit of money that I can save each month. If I had the money to pay someone to tell me how to manage it, I wouldn't need someone to tell me how to manage it!

In a perfect world, this would be my order of things:
  • Buy new things for the house: washer/dryer, mattress, couches
  • Buy Josh a new car
  • Buy a new car
  • Purchase life insurance
  • Start a retirement account
  • Tear down this house and build a duplex. Live in one side, rent out the other.
  • Pay for a wedding (it's going to happen one day, whether it's with Josh or not, so it's on the list)
  • Baby #1 (again, one day)
  • Buy another lot and build dream house, renting out both sides of duplex
  • Future babies (one day!)
But, it's not a perfect world.

So, tell me, how do you prioritize your life (monetary) goals?

  1. OMG! Totally off topic but you're reading "Sing You Home"? I can't WAIT to read your review, I did a review of it on my IF blog. Money, huh, yeah...there's not enough of it. I would say put retirement first, you won't regret that.

  2. I have pretty much exactly the same list, and I have been trying to figure it out for at least a year now. I have no clue where to start, and it's driving me nuts.
