By Popular Demand - SOCKS
The boss lady (momma) is in class this morning which means that I can actually accomplish something on my to-do list without extra things being added to it. But, am I doing that? Nope. I'm blogging, of course.
You ladies asked to see the socks. Your wish is my command.
First, you have to gather your supplies:
- Gloves - make sure you have two instead of just one.
- RIT dye - follow the directions on the package if you can understand them
- Ginger Snaps - dinner :-)
- Salt - just make sure the dye you buy calls for it before you dump it in!
- Something to do while you're stirring constantly for 30-60 minutes!
Second, after you waste about 15 minutes dying half of your socks one color, realize that you do indeed have two sinks and you can dye both at one time. Make sure that the water (and dye) aren't leaking out of the sink!
You would think that because the dye was so bright that the socks would be equally as bright...
They aren't quite Clemson orange & purple, but they're better than white! I had two other pairs of socks in there: one zebra print and one black with white peace signs (not really my thing, but it was a three pack). The dye didn't stick to them at all. In fact, I dyed one of each pair orange & one purple, and the orange just made the other socks look dingy, so I used the rest of the purple dye and dyed the rest of them all purple. Even after all that, you can't tell they've been dyed.
I should've checked what they were made of before I dyed them. The RIT dye works really well on cotton (it's what the Outback servers have to use on their denim), but on fabrics that have more than 50% polyester, it doesn't work well. My socks were 97% polyester. Oh well, these will do for tonight's game until I can come up with something else. I'll try to take a pic of the entire uniform. I'm pretty excited about my purple turf shoes!
Does anyone else know of any good clothing dye that works on polyester??

Now I need something to dye...hmm...
ReplyDeleteWe NEVER use RIT at camp, we always use the Tulip brand and it works fairly well. It's at Wal-Mart or like a Michael's...um in SC, I think it's like an A.C. Moore?
ReplyDeleteHaha, I think they look great!
