Spring Break: Over the years
Facebook has done it again. It has put pictures right onto my computer screen that make me miss my college days.
With Spring Break right around the corner for most college students, I'm reminiscing about my SBs. I had some pretty adventurous SB experiences. And just because I can't pull myself away, I'm sharing them with you.
I don't have any pictures of Freshman year. That was pre-Facebook & I don't even think I took a camera. We went down to Sebastian Inlet, Florida to camp for a week - my sister, my brother in law, my best friend C, and I. We took two vehicles to fit all of our junk. As soon as we got there, we pulled up at a little convenient store and jumped out to run across the street and check the waves. The beaches there have this forest of greenery about 20 yards deep that you walk through before you come to the beach. Meaning, when we walked towards the beach, our cars are no longer in sight. You can probably see where this is going... You see, at the time, Florida was still rebuilding from a major hurricane the summer before (I can't remember which one) and there were a lot of construction people from all over the South that had come down to find work. One roofer (I can only guess by his choice of weapon) watched us walk away from our cars, saw our shiny new surfboards strapped to the top, used a shingle-cutting knife, sliced the tie downs and took off with mine and C's brand new surfboards. We had both gotten custom boards for Christmas and we hadn't even surfed on them yet. The store owner ran out to tell us what he was driving, and we spent the entire week going pawn shop to police station looking for our boards and the guy who stole them, but we never did see them again. The worst part about it was that C's board was hot pink with zebra stripes and had her signature on the board - unless someone shared her name and her penchant for pink zebras, that guy wasn't going to get anything out of that board. We may have saved money by camping out that week, but we lost $1200 in surfboards!
By Sophomore year, I was ready to go somewhere warm that involved very little being responsible and a lot of partying. My roommate and I got a group of friends together and when we got down there, we found another group of Clemson students that were staying in our hotel. It turned out that some of our friends knew them, so we had a pretty large group. We had a blast. At one point, my roommate and I were "wrastlin" (as we called it) in the sand for fun. We turned around and the entire pool deck, overlooking the beach was full of people watching us. I guess they figured with two girls wrestling, they were going to get a show... not so much.
One night, we shoved twelve people into my Xterra, went to a club, and watched some guy get taser-ed.
For SB our Junior year, all of my friends were 21, and sadly, I wasn't, so we headed out of the country with Student City on what we were told would be a "cruise to the Bahamas". What they didn't tell you was that it was a 5 level "party boat" that had wet carpets where they hosed off the puke from the last group of SBers. Before we were able to enjoy that fun, we stopped off in Savannah for St. Patty's.
Then, we drove all night to Ft. Lauderdale to board our boat (I refuse to call it a ship) at 5am, and they promptly started passing out Pina Coladas. At 5am. Did I happen to mention that it was about 50 degrees outside? And that we were on the "sun deck". In the dark. With drinks in our face. What they also didn't tell anyone is that because the boat was much smaller than we thought it would be, we were all going to be sea sick & need the medicine that should not be consumed with alcohol & promptly knocked us all out for almost the entire 5 hour cruise to the Bahamas.
(Once we finally regained consciousness)
Student City was really popular with Clemson students that year, so there were a ton of them on the island. Most of them opted for the all-inclusive package, but we didn't. And let me tell you, our hotel was much nicer on the Internet... we did manage to have fun, though. There was no stolen property or outbursts that required police attention. Hey, and at least no one disappeared.
When we arrived, we were given wristbands to wear. We were supposed to get off the boat and find the "people in the red shirts". Well, we couldn't find them, so we found the taxi that went to our hotel. Apparently at that point we deviated from Student City, where they took everyone to an orientation meeting, that we missed. At that point, we took our wristbands off and did our own thing. We also booked a flight back to Ft. L just so we wouldn't have to get back on that awful boat! It was definitely worth spending $150 on a plane ticket to not have to brave sea sickness for six hours and then drive 13 hours home!
Senior year, AJ and I were dating, and we decided that we'd just go home for SB. My sister had just had a baby, and I wanted to see that sweet little girl! I headed down to Savannah for a couple of days to celebrate St. Patty's. I got my first speeding ticket on the way down - and to this day I dispute it 100%! We spent all day down on Tybee (where I got the world's worst sunburn). When it was time to head downtown that night, the entire downtown power grid went out. What an eventful night: we sat on AJ's front porch, watching Savannah in the dark.
We spent the rest of the week at home, doing touristy things like playing putt-putt. It wasn't exotic and exciting, but it was a stay-cation, even still.
I am seriously missing having Spring Break! Our honeymoon fell in April, last year, so we were able to go to Hawaii, but this year, we got nothing!!! Did you have any amazing Spring Breaks over the years?

Oh how I miss spring breaks! They used to be so much fun! I went to Key West one year…It was crazy! I was with 4 other girls…We were so naive….and all got sick the whole time

I never did anything fun and exciting for spring break...usually went home and worked but oh...how I miss a week off-that was nice!!!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! Made me miss college as well!
ReplyDeleteI only traveled for Spring Break once and it was to Charleston where I live now. Made me fall in love with the area!
Those look like such fun trips! I totally had to laugh about the Student City part. We went on a trip to Acapulco hosted by them, and the orientation was pretty much like "Don't pee in public, here's a beer!" Hilarity ensued, of course.
ReplyDeleteMy 1st year I went to Cancun [& lied to my parents...that's a whole nother story!]
ReplyDeleteMy 2nd year I didn't go anywhere [I think I was feeling guilty about getting 'caught' the year before!]
My 3rd year we flew to St. Petes [me & my boyfriend]. We had a really good time there...very relaxing!
*I only went to college 3 years [don't think I'm a slacker...I got my BA!] :)
I never did anything fun (too broke), and now I wish that I had!
ReplyDeleteOh such fun pictures! I miss Spring Break!
ReplyDeleteI miss Spring Break's too...this whole real world stuff isn't always what it's cracked up to be!
