Show Us Your Life: Favorite Charities

Kelly, over at Kelly's Korner, is hosting Show Us Your Life: Favorite Charities this week. What a great time to reminisce about my college days in a service sorority!

I joined Gamma Sigma Sigma my second semester sophomore year with two of my roommates. This was right before our pinning ceremony:
(Please don't judge the horrendous outfit. Do you know how hard it is to come up with "Sunday dress" when you grew up wearing jeans to church?)
(My first big. Love her.)
I saw a lot of girls come and go, but the ones who stayed became some of my best friends my senior year. Here's my pledge class the spring I rushed and my pledge class the semester I graduated:

My second big and our family:
We did a lot of work with Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, and the Humane Society.
And we did our share of partying:
We used to meet at Wal-Mart on a weeknight and have a contest to see who could get the most food for a certain amount of money. The group who won purchased their meal and we donated it to a food bank.

We would sit in rocking chairs from dawn till midnight raising money for "Rock out Cancer."

We held karaoke competitions with the fraternities as "Karaoke for Cancer."

The great things about being in a service sorority:
1. You're helping the community.
2. You have a team to play intramurals.
3. You can earn scholarships for doing community service without applying.
4. It looks great on your resume.
5. You get to be a part of a sorority without having to pay the ridiculous dues of a social sorority.
But the best thing? You get to do all of those things while making some of the best friends you'll ever have.
(Our first reunion: a year and a half after graduation.)

  4. WOW!! Looks like you had a lot of fun! I never went to college straight out of high school and missing sorority is always what I think about. Working for a non-profit now is my first experience and I LOVE it!!! I know for my organization without voulunteers and service organizations we would not be able to meet our goals - so thank you for being so selfless!
