I chose to read Shadows on the Sand based solely on the fact that it was set in a small beach town, and I am a sucker for beach-based reads. I was pretty surprised when the book took off pretty instantaneously. I've been in a rut of books that seem to take forever to get into. However, the action started pretty quickly, and I was drawn in.
Shadows on the Sand mixes romance with mystery and a little bit of suspense. Carrie, a popular beach cafe owner, has a past that she's tried for quite some time to put behind her. As you meet the other people in her life, including her regular cafe customers and employees, you soon come to realize that this is the story for most everyone. Seaside, New Jersey seems to be the place to come to escape from your past. That is, until your past comes to find you. Carrie finds herself not only facing her mother, who she ran away from years ago, but also wrapped up in a life or death situation with the ones she loves the most. (You can read an excerpt here.)
I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, but it was entertaining and though short in length, didn't leave you feeling like there was something missing. The characters were fully developed, and I found myself pulling for the good guys and wishing harm upon the bad ones.
I give it a B+.
